The most popular methods include traditional surrogacy, gestational surrogacy, and in vitro fertilization (IVF).
Here’s a closer look at each of them:
1. Traditional Surrogacy
When a straight or LGBTQ couple opts for traditional surrogacy, a woman — known as the surrogate — is artificially inseminated with the sperm of the father. Once pregnant, the woman carries the baby to term, and after delivery, the baby is given to the couple to raise.
In such cases, the surrogate will be the baby’s biological mother, as it was her egg that was fertilized.
If the father(s) has medical issues that prevent his sperm from being used, donor sperms can be used instead.
2. Gestational Surrogacy
Gestational surrogacy is frequently used by straight couples. It involves obtaining mature eggs from the mother’s ovaries, fertilizing them with the father’s sperm, and then placing the fertilized egg — now known as an embryo — into a gestational surrogate’s uterus.
The surrogate will then carry the baby to term, and it’ll be given to the couple after delivery.
Unlike a traditional surrogacy, a gestational surrogate only acts as a surrogate for the pregnancy itself since their eggs aren’t used in the process.
Accordingly, they’ll be known as the baby’s birth mother, but not its biological mother.
Both traditional and gestational surrogates are also known as gestational carriers.
3. In Vitro Fertilization
In vitro fertilization, sometimes written as in-vitro fertilization, makes gestational surrogacy possible.
However, it’s also commonly used to assist couples that are unable to conceive a child due to any reason. Eggs are fertilized outside a woman’s body and are then placed in her uterus or frozen for later use.
The IVF process can vary from one couple to another, depending on their personal circumstances, medical history, and health considerations. Some common versions of IVF for straight couples include:
- A couple’s eggs and sperm
- A woman’s eggs and donated sperm
- Donated eggs and a man’s sperm
- Donated eggs and donated sperm
- Donated embryos
IVF can be quite expensive compared to other fertility treatments.
Despite its cost, it can be a good option for couples struggling with reproductive problems, fertility issues, or medical conditions that make conventional methods of conception difficult.
