NGS - an innovative method for genetic diagnosis of embryos

NGS - an innovative method for genetic diagnosis of embryos

Unfortunately, not always in vitro fertilization ends with the successful onset of pregnancy and the birth of a healthy baby. When carrying out IVF, it is possible to exclude child’s genetic diseases at the embryo transfer stage. With this purpose in November 2016, ISIDA clinic was one of the first in Ukraine to introduce an ultra-precise method for diagnosis of embryos - NGS. The NGS (Next Generation Sequencing) method allows detection of chromosomal pathologies with an accuracy of up to 99.9% and almost completely eliminates the risk of having a child with chromosomal abnormalities. The results of using NGS method show an impressive number of advantages of this type of genetic diagnosis in comparison with its predecessors.

This procedure is carried out within the embryological laboratory: specialists take material for analysis on the fifth day of embryo development. The process is fully automated, which eliminates the impact of human factor. The material is obtained from the outer layer of the embryo, thereby the risks for its further development are reduced to their minimum.

Since embryos are able to live in artificial conditions for up to five days, and the analysis takes time, we perform a cryocycle. Embryos are vitrified, and then transferred to the next cycle - to the period most suitable for conception. Therefore, doctors get the opportunity to perform the NGS procedure and better prepare the woman for pregnancy: to stabilize the hormonal background, to make sure the endometrium is ready for implantation.

The main advantages of using NGS method in IVF programs:

  • The NGS method increases the effectiveness of IVF programs by more than 20%. Genetic analysis of the embryo allows doctor to find and exclude from the program embryos with chromosomal abnormalities before the embryo transfer stage. Approximately 70% of success in implantation depends on embryo quality, because in most cases the embryo with genetic damages does not survive - this is the natural protective mechanism of the woman's body. Fortunately, with a timely medical examination, we can determine possible problems with the embryo and identify the presence of genetic abnormalities before the onset of a critical moment.
  • The NGS method makes it possible to perform transfer of only one embryo in IVF program, instead of two or even three. The subject of the number of transferred embryos for in vitro fertilization is extremely important. The fact is that the number of transferred embryos affects the probability of occurrence of multiple pregnancy, which can put the health of both mother and children in danger. Therefore, the transfer of only one genetically screened embryo instead of two or more unexamined ones does not reduce, but increases the effectiveness of IVF program.

NGS procedure is highly recommended to all the patients who plan IVF - especially if there already have been failures at the implantation or gestation stage. The couples who are at risk of having a child with a genetic abnormality should also think about NGS. Primarily, this applies to those who know or suspect the presence of dangerous genes in themselves. Do not forget about the age factor, because over the years the probability of developing chromosomal abnormalities increases.

The diagnosis of embryo with NGS method has a number of extremely valuable advantages, it allows achieving a higher implantation rate, reducing the threat of miscarriage and maximizing the chances of giving birth to a healthy baby.
