Single embryo transfer in IVF program - a key to successful pregnancy and birth of a healthy child
Modern assisted reproductive technologies have enough means and methods to help couples having difficulties with conception to fulfill their dream of a long-awaited child. Up to this day, IVF programs have gone through different changes and innovations in order to increase the success rate, as well as to reduce risks and possible complications for patients. One of the latest advances in reproductive medicine is the elective single embryo transfer eSET. This method has proved its unconditional effectiveness, therefore, now, in almost all modern global clinics specializing in fertility treatment, specialists choose to perform the transfer of one or two embryos.
The subject of the number of transferred embryos for in vitro fertilization is extremely important. The fact is that the number of transferred embryos affects the probability of occurrence of multiple pregnancy, which can put the health of both mother and children in danger. As practice shows, these pregnant women are more likely to develop hypertension, anemia and diabetes, as well as to go through premature delivery and give birth to very preterm newborns. Negative consequences of multiple pregnancies may also affect children who are more likely to have insufficient body weight and necessity to stay in the intensive care unit. In addition, according to statistics, twins have five-fold more chances to suffer from infantile cerebral paralysis and chronic lung diseases. Single embryo transfer provides the smallest percentage of multiple pregnancies, while allowing selection of one or two embryos of the best quality. eSET is an important guarantee for successful course of pregnancy and birth of a healthy baby.
Patients mistakenly believe that the number of transferred embryos affects the pregnancy rate. With three or more embryos transfer, the pregnancy onset rate is 45%, with multiple pregnancy onset of more than 30%. At the same time, with one or two embryos transfer, the percentage of pregnancy onset remains the same - 45%, while the number of multiple pregnancies is reduced by half, up to 15%. Therefore, using the eSET method does not decrease the effectiveness of ART in any way, and the expected pregnancy will occurre with the same probability as during more than one embryo transferred.
