IVF with Donor Sperm: indications, timeline, and success rates

What is an IVF with donor sperm?

IVF with donor sperm is an IVF cycle where the donor’s sperm is used for fertilizing the woman’s oocytes instead of the partner’s sperm. IVF using the donor’s sperm cycle involves the same multiple steps as a routine IVF using the partner’s sperm (fertility assessment, controlled ovarian stimulation, egg retrieval, fertilization, embryo cultivation, and transfer).

Who is it for?

  • Single women wishing to conceive.
  • Heterosexual couples with severe male factor infertility.
  • Lesbian couples desiring to have a baby via IVF treatment.

When to try it?

  • Single women having no male partner.
  • Lesbian couples who are starting an IVF cycle and need the donor’s sperm for fertilization.
  • Heterosexual couples with a history of recurrent implantation failures (RIF) or recurrent pregnancy loss.
  • Heterosexual couples with severe male factor infertility (Azoospermia (semen without sperm), Severe Oligozoospermia (extremely low number of sperm), Asthenozoospermia (poor sperm movement), Oligoteratozoospermia (reduced sperm count and low sperm motility), Teratozoospermia (abnormal sperm shape), Oligoasthenoteratozoospermia (a condition includes oligozoospermia, asthenozoospermia, and teratozoospermia), high sperm DNA fragmentation, and other cases of male infertility.
  • Heterosexual couples with a high risk of passing on a genetic or chromosomal abnormality/disease or condition on the male side.
  • Failure of surgical sperm retrievals to obtain sperm from a man.
  • Inefficiency of sperm retrieved from a man (high sperm DNA fragmentation, abnormal sperm, necrozoospermia, etc.).

How long does IVF using donor sperm cycle take?

A typical cycle of IVF with donor sperm takes about 4 to 6 weeks. But in some cases, the IVF timeline can take longer (for example if IVF involves gamete shipping from abroad; if the couple is looking for the donor with some specific features; if Preimplantation Genetic Testing is considered, if the DuoStimulation cycle takes place, or if there are indications for delaying an Embryo Transfer, and other underlying fertility concerns.

IVF using donor sperm Success Rates

In the best–case scenarios, success rates can range from 57 to 89% chance of pregnancy after one or a few Embryo Tansfers (fresh ET followed up by a FET back–up).
