Pregnancy During the Pandemic

Pregnancy During the Pandemic

Can Covid–19 or vaccination affect the spontaneous conception?

The researchers studied the influence of both factors on 2.126 women planning to conceive a child. All the participants were residents of the USA of Canada, so the vaccines studied were Pfizer, Moderna, and Johnson&Johnson. Both women and their partners filled in a number of questionnaires concerning their lifestyle, medical factors and sociodemographics. The main factor for evaluation was whether or not the couple got pregnant during the next 11 months following either Covid infection or getting vaccinated.

The study showed the following results:

1. 73% of women and 74% of men were fully vaccinated, which did not have any effect on the probability of conception in any of them (female FR=1.08, 95% CI: 0.95, 1.23; male FR=0.95, 95% CI: 0.83, 1.10). Couples with both partners vaccinated didn’t show any difficulties conceiving a baby either.

2. Covid infection in women did not affect the probability of conception (FR=1.07, 95% CI: 0.87, 1.31). Only 7.2% of the female participants had had Covid within 60 days before the starting date of the cohort study.

3. Covid infection in men, however, resulted in short-term decline in fertility. The probability of conception within 0–30 days after the infection constituted only 20% (FR=0.2, 95% CI: 0.03, 1.39). Within 30–60 days after receiving the negative test the probability increased to 82% (FR=0.82, 95% CI: 0.47, 1.45). After 60 days post–covid, there was no trace of any infection and the probability rate came back to normal. 7.8% of the male participants had had Covid before the beginning of the study.

The conclusion: protect our men (but, as opposed to women, they get better with time).
