Kinderwunschzentrum Darmstadt

The Kinderwunschzentrum Darmstadt took in 1986 at the gynecological clinic of the Darmstadt Hospital under Prof. Dr. med. med. G. Leyendecker starts his activity. The first in vitro fertilization was successful and in early 1987 the first "Darmstädter IVF-Baby" was born. Since then, the Kinderwunschzentrum Darmstadt has been working with a remarkable - and personal - constancy. Quickly important innovations were integrated into the treatment concept. Thus, we performed the first intracytoplasmic sperm injection (ICSI) in the Rhine-Main area and later introduced the blastocyst culture, which is our standard procedure today. The embryos are not observed for 2 or 3 days but for 5 days. Decisive developmental stages of the embryo only take place on days 4 and 5.

This procedure was extended by the so-called "German Middle Way". In this case, according to the individual prognosis profile of the patient, so many embryos are cultivated that on day 5 we can reset at least one implantable embryo, preferably a blastocyst, into the uterus. This saves many patients unnecessary treatment cycles.

From then on, the introduction of the embryo scope enabled our laboratory biologists to gain even deeper insights into the development of the embryos with the goal of an even more precise prognosis for quality and implantability. Here, the embryos are permanently monitored by means of a built-in camera incubator.

For very limited semen findings, the IMSI method offers the option of selecting the sperm used for the fertilization of the oocytes obtained.

Increasingly, however, we are looking for women with not yet existing acute desire for children and the desire to preserve their fertility for later years. Here, the so-called social freezing, or social egg freezing offers a possibility. Eggs are removed, carefully cryopreserved (vitrification) and stored in liquid nitrogen at approx. - 197 ° Celsius.

The next step will be the study of embryo chromosomes called preimplantation genetic diagnosis (PID) or preimplantation screening (PIS). In this case, cells of the outer shell are removed from the embryo on day 5 for further examination.

All these innovations aim to avoid unnecessary treatments. The medical goal must always be to help the patient as quickly as possible, but not to harm as much as possible.

We know how stressful the unfulfilled desire for children is for our patient couples. Sometimes you try to get pregnant for several years while all around you have already had a baby. That this often means frustration, hopelessness and stress in the partnership is obvious.

We would like to be the point of contact for our patients at all times in all problems related to the fertility treatment, from the first contact in the context of the initial interview, about any necessary operations to the actual fertility treatment. In addition, we are supported by committed colleagues, among others, in matters of male fertility disorder, acupuncture or socio-therapeutic problem-solving in case of emotional stress.

All this together makes us one of the leading centers in Germany for years, according to data from the German IVF registry, which is not least reflected in consistently high pregnancy rates of more than 50% per embryo transfer (for comparison: about 32% across all German centers) ,

To our great regret, Prof. Dr. Leaving G. Leyendecker on 01.01.2018 due to age. As his former students, we will always regard the outstanding scientific achievements and the extraordinary efforts for the well-being of his patients as a forerunner of our work and continue the Kinderwunschzentrum Darmstadt in his spirit. We thank him for everything he has learned and the many years of good cooperation!
