Many couples who have mild fertility problems may resort to simpler methods of assisted reproduction, such as artificial insemination.

The method consists of two steps: in the first the woman takes medication of hormonal character that induces her ovaries to mature the eggs. The formation and development of these ova are accompanied by ultrasound examination. When ovular maturity is reached, the partner's semen, which was previously collected by masturbatory method and prepared in the laboratory, is introduced into the woman's uterus, a procedure known as "insemination".

Artificial insemination is painless and involves the placement of a small catheter that injects the partner's semen into the patient's uterus.

This treatment is indicated for couples whose woman has the normal fallopian tubes and uterus and for men who have a milder spermatic alteration.

The great differential of artificial insemination is that it allows for a previous preparation of the semen that "corrects" the spermatic alteration and increases the chances of pregnancy. In addition, artificial insemination can also be used to treat infertile couples with no apparent cause after complete diagnostic investigation.
