In artificial insemination, an expert injects the sperm into the cervix, fallopian tube, or uterus of the intended mother. The sperm that is injected into the intended mother's uterus could be of the intended father, male partner, a known person, or anonymous donor sperm.

Before injecting it into the uterus, cervix, or fallopian tube, the sperm is washed to remove chemicals from the semen to prevent any type of discomfort that could be caused by it during the process. This is part of the treatment. Through sperm washing, an adequate amount of healthy sperm is pulled out that is later injected into the intended mother's uterus, cervix, or fallopian tube.

For the semen collection, the doctor suggests the intended father or partner provide the sample in the clinic or if the couple is staying nearby to the hospital then the male partner can collect the semen sample at home. The reason is that the semen sample needs to be washed within an hour of semen collection. In the case of donor sperm, the sperm is already washed and ready for the process.  

There are two techniques to perform artificial insemination; IUI (intrauterine insemination) and ICI (intracervical insemination).  That we are going to discuss further.
