Lesbian couple: ROPA method Spain

The ROPA method, also known as Partner Assisted Reproduction, constitutes the reproductive solution for lesbian couples who have the desire to form a family and becoming more popular among same-sex female couples as it gives both the chance to actively participate in the process: one undergoes ovarian stimulation and provides the necessary eggs whereas the other will give birth to a baby.

This method, also known as “Shared Motherhood”, is permitted by law in Spain and consists in fertilizing the egg with donor sperm in the laboratory. The resulting embryo will then be implanted in the uterus of the female partner.

The embryo culture in laboratory implies a constant surveillance and control of multiple parameters; for this reason in vitro fertilization greatly depends on the quality of the laboratory as well as on the applied assisted reproduction techniques.

Spain has one of the most progressive laws on assisted reproduction worldwide. Both sperm and egg donation are legal and anonymous. In addition, Spanish law provides that children born by means of assisted reproduction techniques shall not be able to obtain information regarding the donor - similarly, the donor shall not be able to obtain information, such as the identity of the conceived child.

Spanish law also provides the study and acceptance of donors, establishing the necessary tests. However, at IVF Spain we go beyond required tests with further testing in order to utilize eggs and sperm with highest assurance of security.

The ROPA treatment is performed by means of personalized and controlled ovarian stimulation, using next-gen protocols in order to obtain 8 - 12 oocytes.
