SUMMARY: Advanced sperm retrieval techniques are designed for some types of azoospermia when there is no sperm in the ejaculate. The other issue when advanced sperm retrieval technique is performed is vasectomy (as it is the only way to retrieve sperm for further use in an IVF cycle). These techniques can be performed at two levels as indicated by the experienced urologist.

More details about Advanced sperm retrieval techniques in FIV Marbella.

The sperm cell is a powerful microchip that contains all genetic information about the “father.” But not in every case sperm can be collected easily and transferred “in one go” to the IVF lab. There are some situations when sperm collection needs advanced techniques. Sperm retrieval techniques are invasive ones, thus, performing any of them requires excessive experience in sperm retrieval.

In FIV Marbella we perform four sperm retrieval techniques: MESA (microepididymal sperm aspiration), PESA (percutaneous epididymal sperm aspiration), TESE (testicular sperm extraction) and TESA (testicular sperm aspiration).

The Epididymis:

MESA: A microsurgical aspiration of fluid from the epididymis that allows an extensive collection of sperm cells as compared to the other aspiration (sperm retrieval) techniques is termed as MESA.

PESA: Easier Technique consisting of percutaneous aspiration of the liquid found in the epididymis

At the testicular level:

TESE: Surgical extraction of testicular tissue from the testes. MicroTESE is the routine aspiration technique that is performed in azoospermia cases.

TESA: Percutaneous aspiration of testicular tissue.
