RAD’s team of fertility experts always perform a detailed workup for every patient to determine the best first course of treatment. Many patients are happy to learn that they do not need to move immediately towards an advanced procedure such as in vitro fertilization (IVF), and that ‘low tech’ infertility treatment options are lower cost and require less medication. These basic infertility treatments include:

  • Timed Intercourse
  • Ovulation Induction
  • Intrauterine Insemination

Patients that seek a very mild form of infertility treatment can opt for timed intercourse, alongside help from our team of fertility experts. For patients that ovulate regularly, eggs may develop from a follicle on their own. Patients with irregular ovulation cycles may need medication to stimulate follicle development and later, ovulation. With close monitoring, intercourse can be timed to give the best possible chance of a pregnancy occurring without further intervention.

Ovulation induction (OI) uses treatment medication (orally or injectable) to stimulate the production of one or more oocytes (eggs) which are carefully monitored via ultrasound to evaluate maturity. Ovulation induction is performed prior to an intrauterine insemination to increase the likelihood of a pregnancy. For patients undergoing more advanced treatment, OI is performed prior to an egg retrieval.

During an intrauterine insemination (IUI), various tests are performed to confirm ovulation, and then the most active and high quality sperm are placed inside of the uterus via a catheter. In some cases prior to an IUI, patients are placed on fertility medication and monitored to help the body ovulate multiple eggs.

Because only the most active sperm are utilized and placed directly into the uterus, IUI increases the chance of fertilization in the fallopian tubes.
