Heterosexual couples are eligible for IUI, and IVF including Tandem cycles & Egg/Sperm/Duo Donation cycles, FET, Embryo Donation, and gestational surrogacy (surrogacy is initiated only for South African citizens and residents).
Single men and male couples can apply for gestational surrogacy using Donor Eggs and their own sperm. It is vital to note that only South African citizens and residents are eligible for surrogacy programs in South Africa. Non–citizens and non–residents cannot opt for surrogacy. Moreover, fertilization cannot commence before the Court confirms the surrogacy agreement. One more thing to consider — both or at least one of the intended parents must provide the gametes for the surrogacy as it is still illegal to use the eggs and sperm of donors. And according to law, only altruistic surrogacy is legal in South Africa. The intended parents are not allowed to ‘pay’ the surrogate mom for her services, only for costs directly related to her fertility treatment, the pregnancy, and any legal costs.
