They say IVF is an emotionally and physically difficult process. What they don't tell you is the majority of the stress comes from the communication and bureaucracy of the clinic who you are dependent at every step of the way. Most of the people we interacted with in person or over the phone (when we actually got a hold of some one, which was rare) were friendly and caring.\n\nBut that was were the positive aspects of our experience ended. Communication on the 'portal' felt like a kafkaesque nightmare.\n\nWe mostly encountered repeated disorganization, lack of continued context, unclear or incomplete information, or outright ignoring certain aspects of messages, in addition to an alarming lack of responsiveness—during some of the most time sensitive and emotionally demanding days of the process.\n\nImportant instructions (like exactly how to administer a trigger shot) were vague or missing entirely, often only explained in links to generic videos. Think about getting written instructions that say to take a medication 'as directed' then being pointed to videos for further instructions, only have the videos say to use the medication 'as directed by your provider.'\n\nThis was a maddening loop that resulted in us googling how to take our trigger shot. This seems horribly wrong considering how much we're paying and physically investing in this process. Just tell us exactly how to use the meds!\n\nTime-sensitive paperwork for my job wasn’t completed for weeks until we physically brought it to a monitoring appointment. We had to leave multiple voicemails and messages in the patient portal to get basic information—like the date and time of our embryo transfer, which we were told we would receive two days in advance.\n\nHowever, two days in advance, we heard nothing. Just radio silence. Was our transfer still happening? Was there some kind of issue with the clinic? You have no idea. It just feels like your transfer, possibly the most important part of the whole process is just not important enough for them to inform you in a timely manner.\n\nInstead of revising a certain the form to align with our wishes regarding testing and discarding embryos, they asked us to point out which page we were referring to. Only after escalating for the tenth time did someone finally confirm they understood our wishes in writing. That should’ve happened the first time and was maddening to have to back and forth over this several times.\n\nThe dystopic part of this whole thing is how every time they mishandle something, or are unresponsive, they don't acknowledge the issue or inconvenience they've caused you. They just smile and respond to your question, sometimes. And only after asking it dozens of times through different channels. This makes you feel like you're going crazy.\n\nAll this has made the process much harder than it needed to be. IVF is already a complex journey—it shouldn’t be made more confusing and stressful because of a clinic’s inability to follow through and poor customer service..
