A long way to IVF: hesitations, preparations, performance

For many couples, dreaming of a child and having troubles with conceiving naturally due to some medical reason, IVF becomes the only chance to give birth to a long-awaited baby. Modern reproductive technologies are rapidly developing; nowadays they are capable of gifting the desired pregnancy even with the most severe forms of infertility. Before considering in vitro fertilization, each couple should examine the stages of this procedure very responsibly and get the answers to all the questions they might have - in order to dispel all doubts and fears.

The basic principle of IVF lies in fertilization of an egg in vitro within embryological laboratory, that is, outside woman’s body with the following transfer of embryos into the uterine cavity. The first successful IVF procedure was performed in 1978 - a girl named Louise Brown was born. This year she turns 40 years old, Louise is a healthy and happy mother of two charming children. To date, more than 6.5 million children have been conceived with the help of in vitro fertilization, while it has been scientifically proved that they do not differ physically, intellectually or psychologically from naturally conceived children.

Preparation for the IVF procedure is one of the most important stages of the program, which consists of healthy and active lifestyle, elimination of possible risks and stresses, complex and thorough medical examination. For this, as a rule, a couple has to make a complete blood test, hormonal and gynecological examinations. Additional therapeutic manipulations may be prescribed depending on the form of infertility and the complexity of its clinical situation.

According to the diagnostic results, the couple is assigned with an individual treatment program. The first stage is stimulation of the ovaries, in order to obtain 8 to 20 follicles and increase the chances of collecting quality eggs during the next procedure. A few weeks later, on a certain day of the cycle, a puncture of ovarian follicles is performed – a special manipulation for oocytes collection. This procedure is performed under anesthesia.

The next stage is the collection of male sperm and its processing. With the help of special technologies, spermatozoa are purified from seminal plasma and leukocytes. Furthermore, the most mobile and morphologically normal spermatozoa are selected. Then comes the most crucial moment – an actual fertilization "in vitro" within embryological laboratory. On the 5th-7th day after ovulation, the fetus is transferred to the patient’s uterine cavity. Two weeks later a blood test is taken in order to summarize the treatment cycle – to ascertain the presence of pregnancy, except for very rare occasions.

IVF is a long and rather complicated procedure that will help to make your biggest dream a reality. Do not hesitate even for a second while making a decision - the earlier you start treatment with ART, the faster you embrace the long-awaited child in your arms!
