Miscarriage — why it happens and what to do

Miscarriage — why it happens and what to do

Unfortunately, not everything always turns out, as it should be. For every woman, surviving a miscarriage is a terrible tragedy and a serious psychological challenge, but it is not a reason to lose hope and give up. Clinically confirmed percentage of pregnancy loss is 15-20%, but fortunately, with timely delivered medical care, complex conditions are becoming more controlled.

Miscarriage is spontaneous interruption or termination of fetal development until the moment of timely delivery, that is, up to 37 weeks. For a competent assessment of the risk of recurrent miscarriages, it is important to understand the difference between accidental and habitual pregnancy loss.

The vast majority of miscarriages are of an accidental nature and don’t indicate existence of pathology. The probability of recurrence of this situation in the future is extremely low, and the chance of successful carrying in the next pregnancy is always higher than the prospect of its repeated interruption. The most common reason for these miscarriages is genetic malfunction, which leads to spontaneous interruption of more than half of pregnancies up to 12 weeks. Accidental miscarriages can also be caused by harmful factors, the impact of which is determined not only by the degree of their aggressiveness, but primarily by the period of pregnancy. Generally, it is infectious damage to the fetus, caused by an acute reaction to the attack of viruses or bacteria. Other harmful factors (toxic, stressful) lead to pregnancy loss less often and, of course, cannot affect reproductive potential in the future.

Recurrent pregnancy loss is a serious reason for concern - in this case, it is advisory to get an adequate medical consultation and a thorough examination. In addition to chromosomal abnormalities, the cause of repeated miscarriages may occur due to hereditary or acquired predisposition of blood clotting ability increasing, to malformation of the form and functions of the uterus and cervix, as well as to thyroid and immune system disorders. To determine the cause of recurrent pregnancy loss with the purpose of further treatment and prevention of repeated miscarriages, doctor makes a detailed analysis of the patient's medical history, prescribing diagnostic assessment of the presence of uterine anomalies, examination of the chromosome set of parents and identification of thyroid function. Some additional immunological tests, as well as an analysis of antiphospholipid antibodies and hereditary predisposition to thrombosis, may be prescribed individually.

«The vast majority of losses are accidental, they are not related to chronic conditions, without an increased risk of recurrence in the future,- said Kseniya Hazhilenko, Deputy Chief Doctor of Infertility Treatment Center, Head of the Recurrent pregnancy loss Treatment Center at ISIDA clinic. - However, applying for help to a specialist for miscarriages will not go amiss, because a thorough analysis of the situation will help to identify the causes of the problem and take actions to overcome it».
