The Growth of Infertility Medical Tourism in Mexico
Mexico continues to attract new patients seeking Treatment and procedures for infertility. This type of tourism is on the rise, so let’s take a moment to understand why.
As a neighboring state to the United States, Mexico attracts many cross-border patients. Americans take advantage of this proximity. In total (not only for infertility), the country receives 200,000 to 1.1 million medical tourists per year for a total of 6.5 billion in 2021.
But what is it that drives people to go abroad for Medical Treatment?
The price is still the main argument. The savings can reach 70 to 90%.
A coronary artery bypass surgery costs $88,000 dollars in the United States, but only $14,400 in Mexico, according to Patients Beyond Borders. In Vitro Fertilization (IVF) costs around $15,000 in the United States but can be as low as $3,000 in Mexico.
Some patients — especially those who are older or suffer from a chronic disease — decide to move to a country where care is cheaper.
But medical tourism is not just about money. “The aging of the population and the increase in serious or chronic illnesses in an overburdened health care system have accelerated the phenomenon,” says Josef Woodman. In Great Britain and Canada, waiting lists can reach several months or even years for certain procedures.
Continuity of care is another issue associated with medical tourism.
Ideally, in Canada for example, family physicians interact with specialists and remain involved in the care of their patients throughout the course of Treatment. Continuity of care may be compromised if the patient travels abroad for Treatment. Some medical tourism companies establish links between the family physician and the specialist in the country where the procedure will take place.
In other cases, patients go abroad for joint replacement, kidney transplants, In Vitro Fertilization or other procedures and return to their family physician without documentation of the care they received outside Canada. The family physician's task is made more difficult when continuity of care is interrupted and the patient has little information to report on the Treatment received abroad.
Conditions favorable to the establishment of medical tourism
