Fertility is a woman's monthly chance of becoming pregnant. Young couples without health problems have an average of 20% chance per month. In the first year of trying, 90% of couples will become pregnant, and of the remaining 10%, half will become pregnant in the second year of trying. Based on these data, we define the concept of infertility.

Infertility is defined as the inability of a couple to become pregnant, after one year of trying, with two sexual intercourses spread over the week, and without the use of contraceptive methods. The couple defined as infertile need specialized assistance, which in its best practice is Reproductive Medicine.

Reproductive Medicine is assistance to a couple who have difficulty getting pregnant, and consists of evaluating the infertile couple, providing guidance, correcting and treating health problems, and finally, offering assisted reproduction techniques. The couple, who are unable to get pregnant, must be evaluated by a specialist in Reproductive Medicine, who should guide the couple's options. The guidelines can be simple, such as explaining that the couple only needs to return home and keep trying, for example, young couples with less than a year of trying, as well as proposing more sophisticated techniques, such as artificial insemination and in vitro fertilization. The objective of the practice of Reproductive Medicine is whenever possible to restore the couple's fertility, restoring or improving the chances of a couple becoming pregnant naturally, but unfortunately, this is not always possible. When we cannot restore the couple's fertility, we offer assisted reproduction techniques to increase the chances of pregnancy, which this couple currently has. No technique offers certainty of result, with artificial insemination we return a chance equal to natural, up to 20% per attempt, and with an IVF cycle, we can double or triple nature's chances, from 40% to 60 % per attempt.
