The course of treatment
Insemination treatment can be performed in the woman's natural cycle or preceded by mild hormonal stimulation in the form of tablets or hormone injections, possibly. in combination. The need for this is assessed in the preliminary study. The purpose of hormone therapy is to stimulate the follicles to grow and mature. This provides better control over the maturation of the eggs and the time of ovulation.
By stimulating egg maturation, typically 2-3 eggs are formed per treatment as opposed to the one egg that matures in a natural cycle. The more eggs that mature, the greater the likelihood of pregnancy, but at the same time, the risk of pregnancy increases by more than 1 fetus, which should be avoided as much as possible.

The development of follicles is closely monitored with ultrasound scan of the woman's ovaries. The first scan takes place around the 10th cycle day, however, with individual differences depending on the cycle length.

When the follicle (s) are the right size, the time for insemination is planned. In some women, a single scan is sufficient, while other women are followed by multiple scans before the optimal time for insemination can be determined.

Insemination is performed during the hours when ovulation occurs. Prior to insemination, the woman gives herself an injection, which gives ovulation approx. 36 hours after. At this point, the actual insemination takes place in the uterus.

Insemination
The actual insemination takes place by placing the purified semen in the uterus via a thin plastic catheter. By inserting the sperm into the top of the uterus, the number of sperm cells that reach the fallopian tubes where fertilization takes place is increased. This increases the chance of pregnancy.

During insemination, the woman is in a gynecological bed. The procedure lasts only a few minutes and is often completely painless. In some cases, menstrual-like murmur may occur during and after the procedure.

The semen sample
If the man's semen is to be used for the insemination, the semen sample must be handed in at the clinic on the same day as the insemination is to take place, between 07.30-9.00 on weekdays and at 8.00-9.00 Saturdays.

If you have less than 1 hour of transport time to the clinic, the semen sample can be made at your own home and brought with you in the delivered cup. During transport, the cup with the semen sample must be stored all the way to the body directly on the skin so that it stays warm, eg under the blouse. If the transport time to the clinic is more than 1 hour, the semen sample can be made at the clinic.

We recommend that there has been no ejaculation for 2 days prior to the semen sample being taken.

For insemination, the semen is purified in our laboratory. This means that the motile sperm in the semen are isolated, whereby the best sperm are selected for insemination.

Pregnancy test
14 days after insemination, you must take a pregnancy test. It is important that you test for pregnancy, even if you have had bleeding / menstruation. It is best to use first morning urine for the test. The chance of getting pregnant is 15-20% per cycle. This success rate depends on several things, including the woman's age.

If you have a positive pregnancy test, we offer a pregnancy scan in the 7th week of pregnancy. Please call the clinic and make an appointment for a scan.
