Suzan Lenz Fertility

I am a doctor and specialist from the University of Copenhagen. I have taken a medical doctorate on the subject: Ultrasound-guided puncture in IVF treatment. 

I was part of the first team in Denmark that performed IVF treatment. I was the first in the country to write scientifically about ultrasound scanning of follicles, follicles; I was actually the first and only one in the country who scanned follicles. 

That was in 1980. I was employed at Rigshospitalet's ultrasound section in the gynecology department and the main task was to ultrasound scan fetuses and take amniocentesis. I have performed about 3,500 amniocentesis tests. 

It was obvious to transfer the technique from the amniocentesis to the follicles, and remove the eggs by sucking the follicles empty with a needle and suction under ultrasound guidance. We did so! Me and nurse Merete Kjellow, seen on the left in the photo.

The first experiments took place in connection with laparoscopy (binocular examination) under general anesthesia; soon we could do it like in the photo under local anesthesia. Eggs were harvested from the very first experiment on 2 December 1980.
