Saad Amer MSc Royal Derby Hospital

Mr Saad Amer is a Consultant Gynaecologist practicing in Derby with extensive experience in General Gynaecology, Reproductive Medicine and Minimal Access Surgery. He qualified at the University of Ain Shams, Cairo in 1985 and completed specialty training in Obstetrics and Gynaecology in a large Teaching Hospital in Cairo. In 1991 he successfully completed a Master degree in Obstetrics and Gynaecology at the University of Ain Shams. His initial period of training in Egypt provided him with a broad-based general experience in Obstetrics and Gynaecology before moving to the UK in 1995 for more advanced training and further postgraduate qualifications in this field.

In the UK, Saad Amer has received most of his training at Royal Hallamshire Hospital, University of Sheffield. He initially started as a Registrar in Obstetrics & Gynaecology before obtaining Membership of the Royal College of Obstetricians and Gynaecologists in 1997. He then obtained a Research Fellowship in Reproductive Medicine and Surgery at Royal Hallamshire Hospital in 1998. During this Fellowship he received special training in Reproductive Medicine and Minimal Access Surgery. He also gained extensive experience in clinical research and completed his research project toward the Medical Doctorate degree.

In 2001 he was appointed as a Clinical Lecturer in Gynaecology and Reproductive Medicine at the University of Sheffield and continued in this post until his appointment as a Consultant at Royal Derby Hospital in 2006. This Lectureship post gave him a unique opportunity to consolidate his clinical and research experience in Reproductive Medicine and Minimal Access Surgery under the supervision of two eminent Reproductive Subspecialists, Professor Ledger and Professor Li. During this period he published extensively on Polycystic Ovarian Syndrome and was awarded the Medical Doctorate Degree (MD) by the University of Sheffield in 2003. He was also awarded several RCOG Special Skills Modules in Assisted Reproductive Treatment (including IVF), Laparoscopic Surgery and Hysteroscopic surgery. He obtained accreditation in pelvic ultrasound by the British Fertility Society.

In 2005 he was awarded the Certificate of Completion of Specialist Training (CCST) in Obstetrics and Gynaecology by the Royal College of Obstetrics and Gynaecology, London.

In his current job as an Associate Professor and Consultant Gynaecologist, Saad Amer takes a leading role in minimal access surgery and clinical research promoting Evidence Based practice of Medicine. He offers tertiary level complex laparoscopic procedures for conditions such as severe endometriosis and adhesions. An audit of his laparoscopic surgery in patients with chronic pelvic pain showed a success rate comparable with that in centres of excellence with a low level of complications. He also offers a subspecialist service for patients with Polycystic Ovarian Syndrome. In recognition of his contribution, Saad has been awarded a Clinical Excellence Award by Derby Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust. This award is only given to very few consultants who demonstrate a commitment to delivering high quality patient care and to the continuous improvement of the NHS.

He has maintained a high level of research activity producing over 30 publications. He regularly presents papers in international scientific meetings and is a regular invited speaker in National educational meetings. He is a member of the British Fertility Society (BFS), North of England Obstetrics and Gynaecology Society and Medical and Dental Defence Union of Scotland and RCOG.
