PGD for gender selection should only be carried out to prevent the birth of a child with severe sex–linked genetic disease.
Singles, male and female couples are not eligible for fertility treatment. A single person cannot store embryos created by using his/her own gametes, including embryos created outside Hong Kong. Instead, any single person can undergo egg or sperm freezing and store her/his gametes for future use.
Couples with severe male or female factor infertility have access to Egg, Sperm, and Embryo Donation. Gamete donation and embryo donation in Hong Kong are altruistic. The donors don’t get financial compensation for donating their eggs, sperm, or embryos except for reimbursing the medical expenses for an egg donor (fertility assessment, medication, tests and ultrasound scans performed during ovarian stimulation, and follicular aspiration), storing an embryo or gametes (eggs/sperm); and any expenses or loss of earnings.
Couples looking for surrogacy services should consider that commercial surrogacy is prohibited in Hong Kong. Its arrangement or advertising is a criminal offense. Furthermore, a surrogacy arrangement is possible only if the couple’s gametes are used in the procedure. If the woman is unable to carry a pregnancy to term and no other treatment option can work in her case. But the couple and surrogate mother should be informed that the surrogacy arrangement is unenforceable under the law.
