WHY CHOOSE AEVITAS?

Aevitas Fertility Clinic is dedicated to research and work in human infertility. Since 1983, a number of “firsts” have been achieved by the Aevitas clinicians in the field of human fertility for South Africa:

• 1st test tube baby in South Africa (1984)
  Born at Tygerberg Hospital, under the leadership of Aevitas clinician, Prof Thinus Kruger.
• 1st frozen embryo pregnancy success in South Africa (1988)
  Under the leadership of Aevitas Embryologist, Mrs Evelyn Erasmus.
• 1st ICSI baby in South Africa (1995)
  Under the leadership of Aevitas Embryologist, Dr Marie-Lena Windt.
• 1st blastocyst freezing baby in South Africa (2005)
  Under the leadership of Aevetas Embryologist, Dr Marie-Lena Windt.
• 1st laser treatment of embryos in South Africa (2006)
  Under the leadership of Aevitas Embryologist, Mr Greg Tinney.
• The Aevitas team was involved in the evaluation of a computerised sperm morphology analyser resulting in a PhD by Kevin Coetzee, titled:  ‘The prognostic value of computerised semen analysis: Normal sperm morphology, motility, forward progression and concentration.’
  The evaluation and publications on the computerised sperm morphology analyser was a world first in 1993 and the computerised sperm morphology analyser is still in use worldwide.

Other groundbreaking milestones include:

• Introduction of the Tygerberg strict criteria on sperm morphology to predict pregnancy outcome in IVF (1986).
  Established by Aevitas clinician, Prof Thinus Kruger.
• The World Health Organisation (WHO) has recognised the Tygerberg strict criteria (established by Aevitas clinician, Prof Thinus Kruger) as international standard since 1995. Furthermore, the Tygerberg strict criteria was published in the WHO semen manual (2010).
• Development of courses in semen analysis and sperm morphology under the WHO umbrella for African Scientists over 12 years (ongoing).
• Other sperm morphology courses (Boston, USA; Belgium; Bern, Switzerland; Norfolk, Virginia, USA and Turkey).

More national and international achievements:

A research record stretching over 30 years:

• The continuous research that has been the cornerstone of Aevitas Fertility Clinic is reflected through the students that have been trained at this unit. Aevitas has produced 13 PhD students, 17 MSc students, 6 felllows in reproductive medicine, as well as 23 scientists trained as clinical technologists/scientists to operate in reproductive medicine laboratories.
• The Aevitas Fertility Clinic prides itself with more than 250 publications in international journals, as a result of work within the clinic. In addition to this, members of Aevitas have served as editors for 12 textbooks (including atlases).
