Infertility is defined as a situation in which a woman has not been able to become pregnant for one year, even though the couple has not used contraception. Infertility occurs in 15% of couples. Infertility is rarely absolute - this can only be said if the woman has no uterus and fallopian tubes or if the ovaries have stopped working. It is very rare for men to have no sperm. At the same time, the longer the infertility lasts, the less likely it is to become pregnant. Both fertility and the success of infertility treatment are most affected by a woman's age: as a woman ages, her fertility decreases and at the same time the effectiveness of infertility treatment deteriorates.

Studies have shown that in about a third of cases, the cause of infertility is female, in a third male , and in a third of cases, both partners have reduced fertility. In about 10% of couples, the cause of infertility remains unclear. Regardless of the cause of infertility, the use of in vitro fertilization, or IVF, helps to achieve the best results.
